Our sight seeing day continued through Great Orme and then into Conwy to the infamous suspension bridge built by Thomas Telford. We walked across that too....feet were burning at this point so it was nice to take a moment for a cuppa and sketch both of the bridge and the statue at the Knight Shop opposite.

Spent a day sight seeing and tried to cram lots in so we could get back to the mountains for our final full day.

Llandudno has a long pier and lots of beautiful Alice in Wonderland sculptures dotted around the town. Apparently the real little girl that Lewis Carol based the character Alice on lived in Llandudno.

 

I especially liked the Poppy memorial...it was huge!

 

* Walked for miles...Feet were killing me by the end of this day!

The collection in The Fitzwilliam museum, Cambridge is so extensive and beautiful I couldn't resist walking around for a while and just soaking it in.
With just two hours to spare it wasn't long before time started running out, so I made a couple of quick studies before dashing out to beat the traffic walden to my car.

Wood and Stone

Time has been tricky recently, hence these two quick sketches in Noodler's red/black ink.

The statue is a carving, so delicate and fine, gifted to me after being rescued from a skip in London.

School Run

The first spread, above, was completed along Benwick River after taking Harry into school and the spread below was completed the same day in Ramsey, sitting on the green, before collecting Harry from school.

It's surprising what you can find time for in the average day.

Cherubs and Angels

Last week my good friend Joannie sent me an angel pin, such a thoughtful surprise.
The cherub is a figurine I purchased for myself some time ago, it's very special to me. Since the angel pin is so tiny, I thought I'd use my cherub to create an image for this spread.

St Mary Magdalene

St Mary Magdalene church, on the Sandringham estate, is quite beautiful. It's a small church that far exceeds your expectations on entry, brimming with treasures and decorative features. Whenever I visit such a place I try to purchase a guide book as a memory, I used the guide book from this Royal venue as a reference to create this spread in my journal.

I think I am missing the great outdoors...roll on Summer!

Column Week 14

This week's entry for my illustrated column in the Cambs Times and Wisbech Standard in print today:



Everything in the garden seems to be blooming early and it's looking so pretty I decided to take a few moments today to create a sketch.

I chose 'Charlie', the statue I purchased in memory of my Nephew. The statue is usually known as 'The whistling boy' and he stands proudly in the corner beside my laundry shed, underneath an apple tree and climbing rose which births cream blooms that turn a shade of yellow with age. The Spring bulbs are now fading soon to be replaced with delphiniums and Jacobs ladder in hues of purple and blue. A dash of red breaks the green of the laurel bush when the redcurrants ripen and a hoard of butterflies, bees and birds keep Charlie company throughout the year, as was my intention. Various shells from our visits to the beach decorate the soil surrounding the base of the column upon which Charlie stands, as well as 'gems' my youngest finds in the yard, such as feathers and fossils.

It is a beautiful corner in the garden, in full view from the house and yet safe from human footsteps.

Pride and Joy

PRIDE
Saturday night, wearing his new suit, my eldest Son Jake attended his first presentation with the Ely Tigers Rugby Club. He has been with them for just half a season and picked up the 'Most improved player' trophy and plaque.
The design for the background of this sketch was taken from his snazzy pinstripe suit.




JOY
Every now and then I get an idea for a story pop into my head like a lightning bolt. I am currently working at making one of these 'bolts' into an illustrated childrens book...A long process that I am in no hurry with and enjoying very much.
The sketch here shows my recent idea, I thought if I scribbled a rough down on paper I may be able to make something of it some time in the future, detailed notes of storyline and characters are on the facing page for reference when that time comes.

Column Week 11

These are the images and text that made up my illustrated column in the Cambs Times and Wisbech standard, in print today:

Monday was the last day of the Easter holiday for Harry so, to make the most of it, we took a trip into Wisbech together and visited Octavia Hill’s birthplace on South Brink. The house has just received a large amount of funding so is currently a work in progress with some great visual displays, models and information.
Paradise Place, a reconstruction of poor housing in Bethnal Green during 1863 nicknamed ‘little hell’, was especially thought provoking. It was after a visit there that Octavia and the artist John Ruskin joined to begin the foundations for social housing and all Octavia’s further life’s work.
Harry really enjoyed operating the security camera in the Heritage Room, zooming in on pedestrians and traffic, while he was occupied I took seat on the deep window sill and sketched the Hare & Hounds pub across the river Nene.
Octavia also co-founded the National Trust and, although her birthplace is not owned by the trust, as a member I received a discount on entry.
