Monday Trio

I was determined to be more productive than I have recently on Monday and I kicked the day off by making strawberry & cream cupcakes then journalling them.



I decided to get my watercolour pencils out and 'play'. The rose in the front garden has been stunning this year and proved a great subject for my playtime from the sunlounger in the garden.



Another quickie just to 'do something'!!!

It worked!

My carefree sketches of the day have revived my sketching enthusiasm and my lethargic attitude seems to have been kicked into touch.

Lazing In The Garden

I used watercolour pencils for this spread, a couple of quick poppy studies while lazing about in the garden.
Our ducks, Joe and Chandler, have found our pond and splashed around in it all day...They are adorable!

They have got so big since my last photo upload. I took some pics and will get around to sharing them soon, promise!

In Search Of A Suit

My eldest has a rugby presentation this evening so we spent Friday shopping at the Grafton Centre in Cambridge for his first suit.

We used the 'park and ride' facility into town from Cowley Road and I attempted to sketch a passenger while riding on the bus. What a challenge! I could hardly keep the pen on the paper long enough to make a mark.



While we were waiting for the return bus I managed a couple more sketches, this time of the 'Kinetic Mobile on stainless steel needle' created by Peter Logan in the 1990's.

Burghley House

On Saturday, Joan and I decided to drive into Stamford and visit Burghley House.
Burghley is one of my favourite stately homes, filled with frescos, history, paintings and carvings...a real treasure trove! The building itself is magnificent and the landscape, designed by 'Capability' Brown, frames it perfectly.
We started our time at Burghley with a light snack in the orangery where we managed to secure a table with a wonderful view. We sketched between nibbles and tried not to let our lattes go cold.


Sketching inside the house is difficult, mostly because there is just so much to feast your eyes upon that you become lost in the magic and forget the stagnant sketchbook hanging limp in your fingertips.


We did manage a couple of quick sketches in the Great Hall but the rest of my work from the day came from either coffee breaks or standing outside sneaking a cigarette.


Our visit was over far too quickly, we had not the time or the weather for a trip into the sculpture garden but this was not my first visit to Burghley and I am sure it will not be my last.

Europa

One of the items on this week's scavenger hunt list at Wet Canvas is to sketch a sculpture. This prompted me to sketch my figurine called Europa, made by the Enesco Gallery. I love everything about this beautiful piece, especially the fact that my boys gifted her to me.

Celebration Hunt

Managed a couple of pages for the 79th Scavenger Hunt over at Wet Canvas over the weekend.
I decided to stick the list into my journal before drawing the items over it on the first page because I always tend to loose it and have to print several throughout each hunt. So far, it's working a treat, even though my sketching has made it a little difficult to read in places.


Monday was my Son's 10th Birthday. We had a great day and the champers and the toys Harry purchased allowed me to tick another couple of items of the scavenger hunt list!

Easter HUNT

Hope you all had a relaxing, long, Easter weekend filled with love and plenty of chocolate!

This sketch was created using my new Hunt Crow Quill holder with a size 107 nib, 'Nut Brown' ink by W&N and a little dry watercolour pencil.
The Hunt 107 is a very fine nib that seems to hold alot of ink and spreads across the page like butter over hot toast.
I purchased the holder and nib from Scribblers.

Females of the Mind

It all started with a few female doodles from imagination, an exercise in loosening up and feature placement.

Then my new sketchbook arrived!

I purchased it from Anna Hawthorne Studios over on Etsy. It is 5x5 inches in size and filled with medium weight drawing paper...I fell in love with it's red paisley cover.

I was having so much fun with my loosening up session that I decided to fill the pages of my new book with loose female faces from imagination. Each one is sketched in under 5 mins and then I added some colour with watercolour pencils, wetting a little with my waterbrush here and there. I chose the pencils because I don't think this paper would take heavy washes and they allowed me to get a good amount of bright colour down without any risks.

I'm not sure why but my last sketch ended up as a female figure rather than a face, perhaps a few more will follow during the next escape session into my imagination?

I have titled this book 'La Femme'

Another short break in front of the TV with the DVD controls and my sketchbook.
The film this time was 'Mona Lisa Smile' and my tools were a pigment liner and a black watercolour pencil.

A Splash Of Colour

This beautiful building sits opposite the church in Doddington village and on Friday afternoon I parked in the bay and sketched from my truck, while munching on a baguette I purchased at the local post office, before collecting Harry from school.

School Trip

Harry's class went on a school trip on Tuesday to the local fire station to learn about various safety aspects. I took him into school and as I left the school bus turned up so I parked up and captured it in my sketchbook quickly before the children filled it and fled.
I used watercolour pencils to colour it and wetted it up in comfort back at home.

Tanya Branning

Another quick portrait from my sofa this evening using the TV magazine as a reference.
This time it's Tanya Branning from my favourite soap 'Eastenders'. That's her character name, I have no idea what her real name is and no real desire to find out to be honest!

I couldn't find a reference of her smiling online but here she is looking rather moody.

The scanner has missed some lighter values here, one of the reasons I rarely sketch in pencil, but you get the idea.
