Only three of the characters were sketched from the TV before I clicked play and created a few more characters from imagination to fill the scene

Greeting Card Design

 

 

We were recently invited to a party to celebrate both the birthday and the retirement of our friends Father. I couldn't find a card that represented both adequately so I sketched my own!

SOUL ART Day

I sketched this self portrait last night while watching TV, then, this morning I was thinking about Soul Art and what it might mean before coming online to check it out (This is my first soul art day) and while concentrating on that thought I added to the sketch, just allowing my thoughts to transfer through my pen.

While I realise I didn't part take in the traditional way (I still haven't read or downloaded the guide) I just watched the intro video and do believe that the result was as it should be. This piece digs deep into my inner self and explains so much to me. It is so personal, so honest!

After reading it for quite some time and digesting it's many messages I feel quite excited about the introduction of Soul Art into my work.

Imagine!

 

You know that feeling right?

 

The nagging little voice that won't give you peace as the clock ticks it's way past the eleventh hour and you begin to realise that another day is passing where you have been artistically idle. You excuse yourself mentally, all the time knowing there is no excuse....but you're home, it's late, there is nothing to sketch!!!!

 

Yup, this is the result of one of those nights!

 

I'm pleased with it!

Not because it's an artistic masterpiece, not because I climbed a fence to get to my desired spot and not because I ran out of water and produced the whole thing on watercolour and spit!

 

I'm pleased with it simply because I didn't need it to be an artistic masterpiece, I didn't get off my sofa, I utilised a half drunk glass someone left on the lounge table but mostly because none of that made me skip another days sketching.

 

Imagination is just the most convenient location isn't it!

Drawing from imagination/memory I played with markers first and then pen and wash in my Sillman & Birn Alpha series sketchbook, testing paper boundaries. Only the darkest marker came through the paper and only slightly on the third layer! That's pretty good. Nicle wet washes on the watercolour, that took a while to dry, but no buckling.
This paper is really nice!

Palette Clean

A very quick scene from imagination with a half inch brush to use up the colours in my palette so I could give it a good clean.

Rock Chick

The self portrait above was created partly from using a reference in a magazine of some rock star and partly from memory. I added my face to the piece from memory and was quite surprised at how it came out, it does look a little like me, infact I think I did a better job than when I use a mirror!
This is all one spread in my sketchbook, scannned in two halves, the section below was sketched while I was getting ready to out with a good friend to the Mad Cat Inn in Pidley, I didn't have time to add colour but the sandals are green and the nail varnish is 'hot pink'.

More Sketchbook Studies

People sketched from imagination and birds sketched from both life and photo references. The ink landscape in the background (below) is a beautiful spot in Haddenham that I sketched on the way home from the galleries. I had but a couple of minutes but would love to return with my acrylics and easel when the weather warms up.

Imagine a crowd

All sketched from imagination over a period of three evenings on the sofa infront of the TV.

Not the easiest of exercises but a great progress check on memory skills.

Crop Rotation

A rough sketch of a painting I had in mind a few evenings ago.

Fast and Furious

A quickie, using Artelier interactive paints, a knife and a 1" brush...from imagination/memory.

Play Time

I spent a little while playing the other day, using up the paints from my class and a large primed canvas. The painting evolved from my imagination and was a nice release.
At some point I'll re-use the canvas but playing with left over paint this way can prove an inspiring and liberating 30 minutes in the knowledge that it can all be coated with gesso afterward.
