Portofino

20-03-13b by Anita Davies
20-03-13b, a photo by Anita Davies on Flickr.
Sketched from a DVD still using Noodlers Highland Heather ink and watercolour, working quickly and loosely with lots of juicy water!
The small sketch in the bottom corner was sketched using a Tombow marker (942) and I love the dreamy/misty effect it has, I think I would like to use this in my journals to compliment a watercolour and ink sketch in this way. Obviously, the lovely thick smooth paper in this journal made by Russell Parry has no problem with the markers BUT would my other sketchbooks react the same?
*Need to give it a go in a Seawhite Concertina to see if it will work for my Rome trip!

Roma Finale

RomaFinale by Anita Davies

Almost forgot to post this spread, the final spread of my trip to Rome back in May. These are the sandals I purchased there, along with the postcard I sent to myself from the Vatican City...No words required to remember my time spent in this amazing place!

Spanish Steps
Another sketch from the bottom of the Spanish Steps, then a light lunch in Dobar before heading back to the hotel to meet our transfer to the airport.
This is my final sketch in Rome...What a blast! Everything I hoped and so much more. I hope you enjoyed my trip too!
I am working on a couple of pages in this sketchbook of various things I brought home with me from my trip just to finish it off, will post when I am done!

Spanish Steps
We always seemed to end up here at night before heading back to our hotel, so I wanted to visit during the day, with my sketchbook, before flying home.

San Andrea Delle Fratte
Our final morning in Rome and our last stroll around this beautiful city led us into the San Andrea delle Fratte and its cloisters, the light in here was just amazing!

Spanish Steps
After more strolling and shop window browsing we rested on the Spanish Steps to people watch for a while before walking back to our hotel. By now daylight had passed and I decided to pull out my pale blue Lamy Safari fountain pen I keep filled with Noodlers Walnut ink and grab a quick sketch...my last of the day.

Fontana Di Trevi
Absolutely packed here!!! The fountain itself is spectacular but the area in which it sits, the square, was so much smaller than I thought it would be.

Santa Maria in Trivio
Sketched in full this time before moving around the corner to see if the crowds at the Trevi fountain had died down a little

Santa Maria in Trivio
One of the oldest churches in Rome. Another magnificent church full of gems, such as the ceiling by Antonio Gherardi .

We stopped in a cafe just opposite and rested our legs for a bit, topping up with coffee as we did so and I made a couple of quick sketches you see here. The break was more welcome than I first thought and I wasn't entirely happy with my sketch here so we stayed a while as I tried to do Santa Maria in Trivio a little more justice.

Palatino
Sketched from opposite the Colosseum, in a quiet place, up on a higher level. It wasn't quiet for long. I didn't notice the crowd forming until I reached into my bag to put my Lamy away and grab my paints...My sketchbook and I had become quite the attraction.

Woke to another sunny day in Rome and took a long casual walk. Sketched from the (dry) steps of the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emmanuelle II with a whole group of teenagers spectating.

Antico Caffe Greco AD1760
We found it!!!
I first heard about this historical coffee shop through Francesco Da Mosto in his 'Francescos Italy' DVD and just knew I would have to pay it a visit.
I indulged in a latte for 8 euros...yes 8! ...but it was worth every cent just to able to say I sat and drank coffee from the same Caffe as the likes of Keats, Stendhal and Cassanova!
I purposely chose latte because I had been drinking cappuccinos everywhere else and I didn't want to compare and take away from the moment...very wise as I can whole heartedly say it was the best latte I had in Rome!

St Peters Basilica
WOW! What an amazing place!
Our guide was fantastic, she was an English speaking Italian and an official Vatican guide, I was so pleased about that I wanted to be told all about it with that wonderful Italian accent. She was so sweet too, respectful, informative and passionate, so passionate that she sounded how I felt, like she was seeing it all for the first time right along with us. I loved that, It was just perfect!
It was packed!!!
Apparently all other museums close on a Monday so you can imagine how busy it was. Still, I managed to soak it up, take pics and lose myself in it's wonderment to the point where no on else existed.
It was both magical and emotional.

Vatican
Ooooooooh! I can't begin to tell you how excited I was sitting sketching this very special doorway. I pre-booked a guided tour through Viator online before I left England which isn't usually my style but I think part of me just wanted to KNOW it would happen and that I wouldn't miss anything once inside.
Apparently, the doorway, which was once the entrance, is now the exit. The new entrance is some modern contraption that didn't appeal to me at all.
Sun is shining brightly!

Hotel Gambrinus
The breakfast room in the hotel was actually a small series of rooms connected by archways and was an architectural feast of it's own. They served everything you could think of, including homemade cake...I wish I was more of a breakfast person when I see a spread like this but it was far too early for me so I downed my expresso and cappuccinos which were delicious and thought about my exciting day ahead!
Very special day planned!
Oh, guess what?...........The sun was beaming outside!!!

Apostoli
A spot of lunch, a much needed coffee and a chance to dry off a little inside the Apostoli. Was starting to feel a bit sorry for myself here, the rain had not stopped and I was worried it would leave everywhere so wet that even if it did brighten up on the following day I would find it tricky sitting anywhere to sketch. The plastic bag I had been sitting on worked rather well today but even that was getting wet and uncomfortable. In need of a prayer I think and luckily Rome does not have a shortage of churches!
The ceiling in Apostoli was amazing, as was the huge dresser and the painted wall panelling...Is there any where bland in Rome?...I think not!
