I'm Back!

Noodlers Bullet Proof Black ink in sketchbook

Just returned from a wonderful weeks break at St Osyth, Clacton-On-Sea in Essex with family.
I took the break quite literally and only did two very quick sketches while I was there, which is very unusual for me but the break did me good and I feel re-charged.

Snettisham Weekend - Sunday

We woke early Sunday morning and set off for a stroll along the coast line to the RSPB reserve where I found interest in the curves of both the coast line and the path leading back towards the cottage.


My last sketch was of the lake shortly before lunch.

We ate lunch, packed the cars and, just before we left, we grabbed a towel and some shoes and popped down to the beach to enjoy the warm sea water...right up to our thighs!

Such a fabulous weekend, full of wonderful memories with a very dear friend.

Snettisham Weekend - Saturday

Woke on Saturday morning and, after a long coffee, got started on sketching the cottage for Tony and Ruth as a way of saying thank you for their kindness. I took a matt and frame with me and framed it for them before leaving, so the photograph is a little wonky and poor quality I'm afraid...Sorry!




We had lunch on the newly built landing deck; sothern fried chicken breast strips, salad, wine, chocolates...all splayed over various rugs and cushions, and finished by dangling our feet into the warm lake.




A quick stroll along the beach, where the colours changed every second...stunning! I produced all of my sketches with a size 12 brush and with the hot sun drying everything so quickly and the brush size I found it quite a challenge.




On finishing my quick sketch I had just enough time to capture Joannie in all her beautiful colours, looking ever radiant.




Early evening I popped our lasagne in the oven and while it cooked, and Joan went out to find more wine supplies, I captured this guy appreciating the wonderful view.

Our dinner was delicious...as was the wine!

Just cathcing up posting the last three entries from my International Fake Journal. It was fun to compose a journal through Alphonses' eyes.




No time to colour these two entries before scanning but who knows, maybe Alphonse will colour them at a later date!

The Quay, Wells-Next-The-Sea - Anita Davies

This was painted using my sketchbooks as a reference, from one of my many trips to Maryland Cottage in Wells last year.
The great thing about going straight in with paint is that you are free to change things without becoming a slave to your drawing. Below you can see the three stages my sand banks went through before I was finally happy with their placement.

I tried something of a vingette on this piece, an idea that has been knocking around my head for a while, and didn't fill the canvas so the primer showed...I quite like the effect but then I have always has a passion for artworks that appear unfinished or incomplete...What do you think?



I worked fast and loose with a big flat brush and Atelier interactive paints, the entire painting took around an hour and a half and was great fun.

Room for improvement - Notes*
I am considering lenghtening the mast so it breaks through to the sky slightly to improve composition and, who knows, maybe I'll add a couple of birds to that sky on the right to keep the viewers eye rolling around the canvas and complete a nice triangle between my mast, the birds and the buoy.

On the Saturday, Joan and I decided on a beach-crawl. We wrapped up warm, packed our sketch kits and headed off to Holkham beach.

I'm back from my 5 day/ 4 night break in Heacham along the Norfolk coast!
It's always difficult balancing being in the moment with my family and filling my journal but I did manage a few quick sketches each day.

Off To The Beach

I'm off to the Norfolk coast again today for the week, this time I'm returning to Heacham and staying at the same holiday park as I did in 2007. You can view my sketches from that holiday HERE.
