Dickensian Day

The Dickensian Market took place today and, for it's premiere year, was a suitable success. Benwick is a very small village in the Fens that receives no through traffic and so the success of the market relied totally upon promotion and local support.
My own stand experienced a very busy time between the opening at 12 until around 1.30 and proved to be the most successful art event I have participated in since my solo at March Town Hall several years ago.
To my delight there was an interest in some of the works that were not part of my 'Close to Home' project that produced some sales and commission works.
Some homes were purchased by their respective owners and I even sold a few books, clearing me out of the stock I pre-ordered before the event.
I met some wonderful people who seemed to have been following my 'progress' in the local papers quite closely, which was most flattering.

Although I left with more of my house sketches than I would have liked to, I realise that the cold, windy day may have been somewhat of a deterrent and remain hopeful that the personal letters I posted to each home owner on Friday will create interest in the following few days.
One always has hope right?
In an area proven as 'difficult' for artists, I feel I had a positive day all around and enjoyed the Dickensian feel of the day very much. I look forward to this becoming an annual event, growing and drawing the local villagers ever closer.

Still battling with the weather here and trying to get this project complete in time to publish the results into a book for release before Christmas.

Close To Home - Benwick

4 Lilyholt Road - Benwick

Another Benwick addition to my Close to Home project.
An unusually coloured home captured early morning before the sun broke. Luckily the tall sunflowers added a little warmth to the painting in the sun's absence.

Close To Home - Benwick

'Rose Cottage', Lilyholt Road, Benwick

I think my reasons for choosing to paint Rose Cottage are obvious from the painting, such character with it's uneven structure and rose laden trellis.

Close To Home - Benwick

'The Squirrels', 24 Doddington Road, Benwick.

I had a wonderful time sketching this home in Benwick. Mr Benfield, the owner, crossed the road to introduce himself to me and we chatted in the rare sunshine for some time. Even from the roadside, it's obvious that this house is loved and cared for.

Close To Home - Benwick

'Jayenkay' Lilyholt Road, Benwick

The weather has been a nightmare for this project, it has rained somewhere in the region EVERYDAY throughout our whole Summer, but I have pushed on grabbing each single sunray as it passed by.
I completed this adorable home before the school holiday but am just catching up on my scanning, I was attracted by it's modern angles set against the old stone chimney.

Column Week 27

This is my newspaper column, in print today in the Cambs Times and Wisbech Standard:

The 'Close to Home' project I started back in May has taken a knock by all the rain we've been having this summer. I sketch the houses 'plein air' which means I complete them whole on location, so the wet spell made it impossible to get any further forward leaving my target of three houses a week more than a little dented.
Then the school holidays began and it seems unfair to traipse my youngest around to sit in front of peoples homes and sketch every day, so I have some catching up to do! That said, I have completed 16 of my hoped 36 sketches and I still have some time before my planned exhibitions nearer the end of the year. I'm hoping a late summer will enable to me to pick this project up after Harry's return to school.
Seeing a strange woman perched on a chair outside your home is not something you witness every day but local reaction has been fantastic and I've met some wonderful people through this project who have made me feel so welcome - Thank you!

Close To Home - Benwick

The Limes - Benwick © Anita Davies

I sketched this home from one of my favourite locations, along the Nene river in Benwick. I sat on the opposite side of the bank in my travel chair with the sun blazing down on me and the river trickling alongside.
This home has often caught my eye, apart from it's obvious beauty and magnificent location, I have always been impressed with the immaculate lawn.

Close To Home - Benwick

Hope Cottage, Benwick © Anita Davies

You may remember the plans I made for my Summer Project entitled 'Close To Home'. If not, you can read all about it HERE.

As planned, I have began my journey sketching through neighbouring villages starting with Benwick and the home of Adam Keppel-Garner, webmaster of the Lilyholt Road website.

I tried a couple of different formats and decided I liked the fading out sketch best of all.

I'm using an Arches Satine HP watercolour block to produce works mounted at size 10x8" for this project, along with my Schmincke watercolour pans.

The aim is to keep them as plein air 'sketches' and not become too fiddly just because I plan to exhibit, publish and sell them.

I'm contemplating publishing them in monochrome to give them a nostalgic feel and to keep the cost of printing down making the books more affordable...What do you think?

TAB 2 - Village Scenes

My second TAB (Tiny Art Book) is full of location sketches of a local village, Benwick. I set out for a drive earlier in the week and spent a while sitting in the truck, sketching and painting.

The book measures just 2.5x3.5 inches and the pages are 8.5x6 centimetres. Four pages, four local watercolour and ink scenes and the two pages at the back display my name and a few paint splashes.

The book fastens with a cream satin ribbon tied into a pretty bow. The covers are painted in French green acrylic decorated with a small hand painted flower design.

I also dug out my ACEO (collectable art cards) box from the studio today and came across this oil painting I made last year entitled 'Purple Iris', which can now be found listed on eBay here.

We experienced an earthquake here last night which registered 5.2 on the Richter Scale. It was very short lived and absolutely terrifying.
