Five Minute Faces

Today's journal entry consists of ten minutes work; two 5 minute faces sketched in pigment liner. The face creeping in from the bottom left is me, sketched looking into the mirror of a new make-up compact I got for Christmas, and the handsome gent on the right is my nine year old Son Harry who was kind enough to sit still for five minutes....Just five mind you!

I thought a five minute time limit would prove an interesting way to scope my progress, weaknesses and abilities. In such a short time one has to pick their lines carefully and provide enough shading to make the features sit at their appropriate dimensions believably.

I didn't have enough time to finish Harry and, tempting as it was to ask him for an extension, it would have shattered the whole exercise. I added a little coloured pencil after the time limit, just to make the page more interesting visually.

I think this would be an interesting exercise to repeat on a regular basis and intend to do so.

Great work anita...only 5 minutes..wow! And I like the way that Harry is left unfinished. Five minutes for a nine year old is an eternity in any case, so leaving it unfinished gives it a suggestive feel.

No way I could do two faces so fast. Probably not even one. I'm timing myself these days for my 'Fast Sketching Techniques' drawinfs, and I'm just so sloooooooow.

This is an interesting exercise. I'm looking forward to seeing more of these 5-minute sketches!
