Montmartre Painting -Step 3

Montmartre - Work in progress

What you see here is a conflict of styles.

For some reason I started working a session from the photograph I had rather than my sketch and as a result I have two styles, the loose, dreamy top half and the tight, somewhat static bottom half.
My next session was spent trying to gain some unity within the piece and ignoring the urge to throw darts at this canvas and start the whole thing over again.

I put a painting into a show last spring here in Florida and when I got the judges critique at the end it said just that "conflicting styles". And that was correct. It's difficult when you stop and start with a painting because moods and styles fit with your mood and feelings of the moment and what you are remembering about the subject matter. You can easily slip from one to the other. It'll be interesting to see what you do here (other than the dart idea.)

I don't see this a problem Anita, as the sky is not only 'ethereal' with the dome disappearing into the light, but the figures are very close in this composition and are in any case more solid. I think the contrasts give recession.

Judges have to tell you something! This looks like you are outside. The sky never stands still. Your judge Ginny, was a couch potato only! Probably has never owned a Bumpack! I have been taught my styles. Spelling, I am not sure of.
It is a beautiful painting - bluster the hair a little-make it more airy.
