Aniseed Balls

I brought this gorgeous jar home from the gift shop at Burghley House for my Son Jake, he loves aniseed balls and has already crunched his way through half the jar since my sketch...Yes, crunched! He has much stronger teeth than his Mum.

I love aniseed balls and love your jar of them, they seem to be just so difficult to get, when we lived in the Cambridge area we had a little shop in Cottenham on the Green that also used to sell wool and haberdashery as well as sweets but now its long gone

I don't believe I have ever heard of them.

I love the reflections on the glass along the edges. Did you use masking fluid to leave those thin slivers of white?

I can't imagine eating "straight" anise stars! What are they covered with? I'm not sure that even chocolate would be mitigating enough. Fabulous painting. And do tell... masking? or paint-around?!!

I wonder too...what ARE aniseed balls? They do look very festive!(I'll be off to "google the answer right after this post.)

The jar is amazing-weighty and substantial but yet crystal clear and shiney. Love it, love it, love it!

Hehe - funny to think of people not being familiar with aniseed balls! Tend to imagine these things are universal. My mother buys them in huge packets and ends up giving them to me ... and even though I don't even think of myself as a particular fan of aniseed, I always scoff the lot. Very moreish!

I love the way you've depicted the glass.

Hey Anita Your previous 'commentors' have said it all - the glass is stunning, and yes folks I saw Anita paint this one and she left blank paper for the highlights - she has such control that theres no masking for our inspirational Anita. The depth of colour of the aniseed balls is absolutely right and very rich. Love it.

Maybe anise balls are a UK thing? I've never heard of them either -- do they taste like licorice? They're very pretty, and this is a great drawing -- the color is beautiful.

I'm with Amy, we must not have these in the US. They're gorgeous though, based on your painting! Beautiful work!
