Life Class - Week 8

Gouache on Bockingford watercolour block - 25 min pose

Week 8, the second session of this batch of life classes. I guess I should call them 'sessions' as they are model only with no tuition but class just rolls off the tongue so much easier doesn't it?

Anyway, this week I took my brand new gouache set along, it travelled well and behaved wonderfully. I experimented with it on white watercolour paper (above) and was very happy with the results.

There were two back view poses this week. I love back view poses, they look so elegant and sensual with all those wonderful curves, I think because, even when naked, they leave so much to the imagination and silently encourage an amount of respect and innocence.

I also experimented with the gouache on a coloured background on watercolour paper I created by mixing two acrylic inks liberally onto the surface and then covering with a scrunched bin liner. Luckily it dried in time for the final pose, a tricky little number with some challenging foreshortening in the leg area. I spent most of the 25 mins positioning the figure on the page and then concentrating on those legs. We are going to have this same pose for 25 mins each week at the end of our sessions to enable us to build a work through. I wish I had remembered my canvas for this but the acrylic background presented new challenges in itself and allowed me to get more acquainted with my new medium.

I agree with your thoughts on the back poses....these were always my favorite to draw when I was taking "classes." :) It's amazing how the curves alone can be so sensual.

I'm really liking what you are doing with the gouache. I haven't ever experimented with it before, but you make me want to.

Hi Anita. these life studies are very good. I like how you risk putting colours, it's so much fun do play with it. give a lot of life to your work, like the "back to life" gouache, too. Try getting Virtual Pose for foreshortening practise between classes if you want... Greetings. Martín.

Anita I just love the first one. So elegant and just the right amount of color.

Anita,
Your gouache painting of the back pose is gorgeous - just the right balance between painted and unpainted areas!

Oh, I just love the gouache one! Beautiful! The others are great too, but the gouache is just fantastic.

Hi,
just stumbled in here while looking for gouache work... your life studies are beautiful!
And I like the idea how you play with the gouache consistency on the first one.

These are all wonderful poses and your work is just so strong. Back poses are great. I love them because of all the muscles and little fluctuations in the skin tones. So interesting. I've missed following your progress and it is still inspiring.

Thanks Suzanne. I tend to treat them like watercolour when using them and felt quite comfortable with them instantly. I love the chalkiness they produce and, with the help of white, they make great skin tones!!!

Thanks Martin. I find posemaniacs to be very useful and it's free. ;)

Thank you Nina...I am quite pleased with it too.
1. because I think it's looks good and
2. because I didn't 'fiddle' and left it well alone, unfinished but finished in it's own right.
